Summer Fun

Long time readers might remember this post from 2018 when I shared the things I enjoy most about summer.

Summer 2021 is quickly waning so we spent last weekend doing some of my favorite things.

This is how our beach should look. πŸ™‚

Saturday we hosted a picnic for family and friends. Many who were invited could not make it but we enjoyed spending time with those who did.

The weather was hot and humid – the dog days of summer – but the breeze was heaven sent and coupled with the shade of the large oak tree or a dip in the pond and a cold bottle of water to keep hydrated, the day seemed perfect. I personally enjoyed visiting with everyone so much that I never even noticed how hot it was. πŸ™‚

Sunday was a day to relax. The weather was a repeat of the day before and my husband and I made time for an afternoon nap in our recliners. After dinner we went to the farm to play. I started by spending about 30 or 40 minutes paddling around the pond on my swim ring. The water was most refreshing. After that I spent another 45 minutes or so riding the 4 wheeler. πŸ™‚

Summer is not over, and like I do each year at this time I am vowing to embrace the good weather that remains. Since the weather has cooled a touch I will find myself in the kitchen for several days this week canning tomato juice but being thankful for the wonderful staycation we had this past weekend.

What is the best thing you have done this summer?

  1. That looks like so much fun, love that photo is tells a happy story for sure. I love going up north with the family and spending time up in the cool pines and exploring the creeks. Also I love swimming when the moon is full and lights up the night where you can see everything. The crickets chirping, the little wild doves I feed early in the morning and just having my family near me and happy, those are what I love about the summer months.

    1. When we had our pond dug it was in anticipation that someday we would have grandbabies that would play on the beach and in the water. It brings me so much joy to see that happening. πŸ™‚ Thanks for sharing what you love about summer – I hope you have had a good one.

  2. You needed a day to play and while the day away after the Spring/Summer we’ve had and what you’ve had to deal with in the garden weather-wise. Summer is unofficially over as of this weekend. I am and am not sorry to see it go – the volatile storms and heat and humidity took away from the joy of Summer this year, not to mention the worry of COVID and a resurgence. I walked alot, but stayed close to home due to flooding in so many parks, so I can’t come up with a good answer for you Ruth.

      1. Yes, I try to eke out every step I can now Ruth. Like my squirrels, it is gathering time for me. My annual ritual and I’ve gone three times, one more tomorrow and hope to be done soon. Not that I want the bad Winter weather, but they say we are due for lots of snow and cold weather. I hope we don’t have another Summer like this one, for both our sake … you suffered more than I did for sure.

      2. It should be good weather this week for walking but I know it’s more challenging as it gets light later. Yes we are hearing lots of snow and a long winter. This summer hasn’t been the best but when I see the devastation in place like Louisiana and New York I am thankful for what we had.

      3. Yes, I am building up as many miles as I can for the “lean”months, time change – all those factors. I hope they are wrong, but yes, the Northeast flooding is just horrific and if we didn’t have our tornadoes and derechos to fret over, our weather would be 100% perfect. I hope tomorrow’s severe weather fizzles out.

      4. Well we are having more rain on Sunday night – heavy rain, so there we go again with “when it rains it pours”. That storm was worrisome last night. When they said some rotation in Monroe and possible rotation toward Trenton, which is just 9-10 miles from me, I really worried. Too close for comfort. We are going to have a very warm September, so probably it will not be the last of the severe weather. Sigh.

      5. That storm didn’t amount to much here – just some rain and wind. 10 miles is close as far as tornados go. Glad to hear all is well. I’ll still take the hot over the cold. πŸ™‚

  3. I miss those family picnics at the farm. Hopefully we will make that trip back this fall. The best thing I have done this summer is my daily walk. I believe nature heals our soul. Every day there is something new to see. I am constantly amazed by our beautiful flowers and abundant wildlife. So even though a part of my heart longs for the past, the walks prove to me every day how blessed I am to be where I am right now .

    1. We miss you and Randy too (not just at the picnics). I’m glad that you have kept up with your daily walks – I think nature heals us mind, body and soul. I do hope you can make it this fall but if not I understand.❀

  4. That sounds about perfect, Ruth! I always hate to see summer come to an end. Yet I love fall days and winter fires. 😊 We had some grandchildren over the summer, and went to the fair! Garden is producing beautifully and canning is in full swing! Enjoy these final days of summer.

    1. Ah, precious moments with the grandchildren! πŸ™‚ My husband and I went to two of our county fairs. We live on the boarder of two counties so both were close to home. I’m happy to hear that your garden has done well. Ours has struggled due to too much rain.

  5. I enjoyed reading about your picnic with family and friends.

Both our daughters came to visit this summer, as well as John’s sister and husband. We have dealt with a number of medical issues, and I’m thankful that we had the time and ability to take care of them. We have also seen more of our wonderful neighbors with COVID rules relaxed. God has given us such blessings!
