Attention Michigan Drivers: A Reminder to Put Down Your Phone!

Dear Friends and Family who drive in Michigan,

On June 30th a new law goes into effect in Michigan. The law makes holding or using a cell phone while driving a primary offense — meaning an officer could pull someone over and ticket them for it. The legislation defines holding a cell phone or electronic device as physically supporting it with “any part of the hands, arms or shoulders.” See this article for more details.

I do believe it is a best practice not to use the phone while driving as one can easily become distracted by using the phone and an accident can happen in a split second, but if that in itself is not reason enough to wait on that call or text until you are done driving then hopefully the threat of getting pulled over and fined will motivate you.

Please drive safe! ❤

  1. Distracted driving is truly an epidemic. Our phones are an addiction. We travel through states that have this law in place and still see people using the phone while driving. Hopefully it deters a few.

    1. There are very few reasons that I can think of when people really need to use the phone while driving. If a call is that important they could just stop somewhere and make it. There are also now a lot of hands-free phone options that many people are using so they can still talk on the phone while driving.

  2. I hope it helps Ruth. I heard the MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw say that 1,000 people lost their lives in Michigan due to distracted driving. I had a friend who lived in Florida and he was stopped at an intersection for a red light and a dump truck driver was texting and drove over Kirk’s car. They had to get a crane to remove the dump truck to get to Kirk who was airlifted to a hospital with massive internal injuries, a broken back and many other broken bones – he died two days later. I recently e-mailed his friend on the one-year anniversary of his death (05/26/22) and asked if the dump truck driver was charged and he said “not yet” and it was also determined he was on drugs. Nice. It is like the Wild Wild West out there these days.

      1. Thanks Ruth – I think so too and Kirk’s friend Tom told me that this truck driver had had drug issues while driving before this accident – that makes it even worse. It’s terrible – Kirk was only 46 years old.
