As of 5:30 PM today, June 28, two of the four killdeer eggs, from the nest that is in our driveway, had hatched.
This one somehow managed to get out of the nest. I thought it was injured or dead,
but my husband picked it up and put it back in the nest.
Like chickens, ducks and geese, killdeer chicks hatch covered in a fluffy down and will be up walking/running around within hours after hatching.
The unhappy parents were both nearby screeching and doing the broken wing act as my husband and I checked out their new family members.
We are very happy to see these little ones arrive so we can reclaim that section of our driveway.
It should be about another week when the next brood hatches. Stay tuned. 🙂

Awwww. Their nests are always in a horribly inconvenient spot, but they are so much fun to watch.

We haven’t seen them up running around. I think the parents moved them to the field next door. At least we can use the driveway again.

indeed! They were just little balls of fluff but are now up and running around and foraging. We haven’t seen them. I think the parents have them in the field next door.

Killdeer chicks sound very similar to the Bamble Quail we have in AZ. They hatch and start walking all around. They nest on the ground or in flower pots etc. as well!

It did seem like it took a long time for them to hatch while we waited to use our driveway again. I guess you can’t rush nature. 🙂

How sweet – nice you got a photo of the broken wing act too. I was amazed to see that for myself back in April at the Wildlife Refuge after reading about it and seeing videos. I hope you get some more pics of the new brood next week and these cutie pies running through the potato patch like the others. 🙂

Yes, you have to worry every time you pull out. I had that happen when I had the five squirrels I fed at the house (before the hawk got them). They’d hang around the garage and I’d have to shoo them away as I worried I’d hurt them pulling out and also, stomp my feet after I put the car away to ensure none of them stayed in the garage under the car … it’s a small garage but plenty of places for a squirrel to hide. One got into my neighbor’s garage as he kept a coffee can of peanuts in there and he tore the plastic cover off the can, stuffed himself almost into a peanut coma, then got bored and chewed all kinds of things in the garage – he was there overnight I believe.

Yes. They like dirt or stones. Usually in the most inconvenient places.

That’s strange – I would think they would be too close to predators….or being run over by a car!

It does happen. Early this sprig we found a nest with four eggs in it my husband flagged it so we would be careful not to harm it. Then one day all the eggs were gone. Apparently, some predator got them.
