The Week in Pictures

Well, maybe more like the past 10 days or so.

Wildlife

I’ve had a hard time getting good pictures of the turtles. This one was enjoying a swim.

A snake in the grass.

Bees Feeding

I picked some dandelions and my husband made then into dandelion tea – what used to be considered a spring tonic.

Other Projects

Double batch of aloe soap.

Homemade ice cream made with almond milk. You can find the recipe here. I did use regular sugan instead of the sweetener called for in the recipe. I also added chopped walnuts. It turned out good!

Thanks for visiting and Happy May!

  1. Happy Spring. It sure seems like it’s been taking its time getting here this year. All the pics are beautiful. Is fresh dandelion tea bitter? I have only had store bought and I didn’t care for it.

    1. It does seem cool for May. We are forecast to have temps mostly in the 50’s and 60’s for the next 10 days – only one day in the 70’s. It does look like we are done with the overnight freezes though. The tea had a very earthy flavor – a bit bitter. We only used the flowers. I think the leaves and roots have more bitterness.

  2. Well, look at all the Spring-y things you’ve shared with us Ruth – now if we can just get a wee bit warmer. At least we’re not having severe weather from the heat spikes which is a blessing. I read there were snowflakes coming down in Elizabeth Park in Trenton. A friend’s mom used to make dandelion wine back in the day. He had to pick them and she made the brew. I hope you enjoyed your husband’s tea. That’s a big snake – yikes! The ice cream sounds like it would be fun to make and all that soap will last you for a while.

    1. I know! These temperatures are not what we hope for in May! We considered making wine, but I didn’t pick enough dandelions. That’s a lot of work! So, tea it was. The tea was ok but not a favorite. LOL! I thought the snake looked bigger in the picture than to my naked eye.

      1. I hope your fruit trees have been okay with all this cold weather Ruth. I have been reading about how growers are worried here in Michigan – hopefully this one day of warm weather on Monday will not cause issues (besides storms) as we’re soon back to below-average cold temps again. I’m thinking dandelion tea might be bitter? I would not be calm with any snake, big or small. I was surprised to see the snake in the tree that I totally missed until I saw the image on the screen. I’d have let out a scream and bolted for sure!

      2. Yes, it was a beautiful day. We got a couple of rounds of torrential rain, some rumbles and that was it, but during the night we had some high winds. I looked up our city’s weather history for overnight when I got online and it was gusting in the 40s. We have lots of big, old trees and with all that rain, it gives me cause to pause.

  3. Nice photos. That looks like a very long snake. Love seeing the bees buzzing around at your place. Pretty flowers and the chickens look happy. Happy May to you!
