Playing With The New Editor

Though I have been able to manage publishing my posts with the new WordPress editor I still have a lot to learn. The best way to do that is to play with it a little bit, so I put some of the farm photos I’ve taken this month into a slide show.

Please let me know what you think. Do you like the side show format or would you like to see the photos all on one page and scroll down through them to view? I appreciate your feedback. šŸ™‚

  1. I had this idea to write a separate post for every feature of the new block editor. Then, I realized that there are just SO many of them. Since my blog is mainly focused on text, I don’t really use the other stuff.

I do like the slideshow. I think it serves a purpose. But like someone else mentioned – it’s nice to read about the photo while looking at it and the slideshow doesn’t really allow for that. Unless you were to write up a whole post about all the pics and then did the slideshow at the end.

Bottom line – it’s not bad. But I struggle with things that reinvent the solid wheel that we know and love.

    1. That would be a good idea for someone who has lots of time and knowledge of all of it. Like you there are many things I will never need.
I appreciate your thoughts on the slide show and agree that it has it’s place but as a writer it was hard for me just to put up pictures without the narration. I am happy that you and others have said they enjoy the narration along with the photos. I will continue to do what I have been doing all along. šŸ™‚

      1. Glad you can harvest it today – amazing how you had a heavy frost … too early for that weather. We were at 40 when I got up and it had to get to 38 to break the old record on this date. It went down to 39 as I left the house and was not in the car, so never heard a newscast for many more hours. I had many layers on … no frost tonight for us as it will be warmer and I suspect you will have it warmer as well. Next week it goes to 80 one day!

  2. Ruth – I’m answering your question re the Duc boat here as my blog is sort of anonymous, so I didn’t want to actually say in the blog itself. If you check out the background of the photo of the guys floating in the water in the tubes you can see your country and the US flag flying in the background. I think you are north of Linda, so you’d be west of me? I’ve only been on the Duc boat a couple of times, for work sponsored social events, none of them recent, so I can’t say my experience was much of a party, but I imagine it could be when they book live music bands on at night and the booze is flowing freely!

    1. I thought the area looked familiar but when I googled the name of the trail I came up with a site on a different Great Lake then seeing the boat had me confused.
I think it was about 23 years ago when my daughter was in 1st grade that I went on a school field trip with her class to that park. The beach was much larger then. I can’t believe how much of the land is under water.

  3. I tend to click into blogs so that I can read the posts in the beautiful surroundings of the blog owner… that way the whole thing comes together.

The slide show worked beautifully, and the photographs were all lovely. But … I have to admit that I miss seeing a word or two about what I’m looking at. Not telling me I’m looking at a flower … (dur) but perhaps telling me where the flower is, or what it is. Or if there is a photo of a chimney top – where the chimney was, and what was it that attracted the person to photograph it. That sort of thing.

But … the slide show really does have a place, and I loved it. So do use it. I should imagine that it makes things a lot easier when building a post.

Sending love and squidges to you Ruth ~ Cobs. xxx

    1. I really appreciate your feedback Cobs. To be honest I found it difficult to just put the pictures out there with no explanation or caption so the slide show may have it’s place but I doubt that I will use it often. (I may even do a second version of that post using those pictures with some explanations)
      Thanks again.
      Love and squidges back atcha.

  4. Ruth, the slide show works on your site, but not in Reader for me….it’s just a list of pics. But I am reading on my laptop. I find the slide show easier to view instead of scrolling down. I have the same problem with my font…..WP changes everyone’s font to the same one in Reader, but on my blogsite/homepage the font is way too thin, so I darken/bold it and then it’s too dark on Reader. I need to experiment….once the weather is miserable again…

    1. I hope that time to experiment doesn’t come real soon. I will happily wait for that miserable weather! I’m glad you liked the slide show. I think it will work well for a series of pictures but if the pictures need explanation I don’t think it will work because I did not see a way to caption them in the slide show format. (maybe I missed something though.)

  5. Your slide show worked perfectly for me. I am reading it from my android phone so i dont really know what format I’m getting it in. But its exactly the same as the pdf pattern designers, and we all know that I am familiar with scrolling through their sites šŸ™ƒ

    1. Thanks for letting me know that the slide show works on the phone. The “reader” that others have commented on is a feature for those who have a WordPress account where if we follow a blog all of their posts will show up in reader. It is convenient so we don’t have to follow by email or save them all in favorites. Apparently though it does change some of the formatting of the posts. šŸ™ƒ LOL!

  6. Hi Ruth – I was ready to sign off for bed, having never made it to Reader as I got here so late … what caught my eye was your new profile picture. šŸ™‚ And, I like your pictures – I did a post yesterday and scheduled it for Tuesday morning and mentioned your Teddy Bear sunflowers – now I see you have more regular sunflowers. You have a lot of color around the farm. I like all the photos and want to mention that I did the same as you – got a slideshow together and it looked okay on my blog site, but the same thing happened in Reader to me, just a series of pics with dots. It was the 4th of July flag pics. It must be a glitch … I thought it was just me.

    1. I did not do anything to change the profile picture – I have never added one so WP must have picked something for me.
We do have sunflowers planted in different areas around the farm. The ones in the back field garden were between 4 and 5 feet tall but the ones in the front garden (in the pictures), that my husband watered during they dry spells, are probably between 9 and 11 feet tall, Maybe taller – we haven’t measured them.
The colors are spectacular this year thanks to the late season rains that have kept things alive a blossoming. I hope it helps with the fall colors as well.
I’ll keep an eye out for your Tuesday post.
When posts appear in my reader I usually click visit site instead of just opening them in the reader – I guess it does make a difference.

      1. Yes, the flowers are still going strong here too Ruth. I am going to put all the yard stuff in the garage this weekend I think. I hate to do it as it still looks nice out there (I use silk flowers and have since 2012 – this year I had to buy new ones as the other ones were 7 years old and quite faded so I had to get new ones). But last year or the year before we suddenly were going to have frost and I heard it on the news and had to scramble after work to get the hose in and the water off and some pots put into the garage so they didn’t crack. So going to be proactive and do that when I come back after walking. I do that most of the time rather than use Reader because the photos look better on the actual site – if it is just writing, I just read it there. I have been on the Block Editor since April 2019 and the nicest thing I can say about it is that you can make a justified right margin and make your headlines bigger … these look nice on the blog site, but unfortunately do not carry over to Reader. I went to a sunflower field – was excited to go and go there and everything was green – you’ll see the pictures tomorrow. There were no blooms yet!! I found another place to go so all was not lost.

      2. The cold weather might come sooner than we hope so being prepared is a good idea. I started splitting wood yesterday that will be used in our fireplace when needed. šŸ™‚
That must have been very disappointing to see a whole field of sunflowers not blooming yet. I’m glad you found the other venue to save the day.

      3. I keep hearing about the upcoming La Nina and today Paul Gross was on WWJ explaining about climate change as to the wildfires and more hurricanes and our Winter which he says will not be as bitter cold as usual, but more types of precip (rain/freezing rain and snow – ugh).

    1. Thanks for letting me know. Apparently some of the formatting only works on the actual site and not in reader. I don’t blame you for sticking with the classic. The block seems like a lot of extra unnecessary work.

  7. I have realized Ruth that a lot of the image blocks work on our website, but not in WP Reader.
I think 90% of us do all our reading in the Reader, so I am seeing a lot of funny looking posts, including my own!
