Garlic Harvest and Lavender in Bloom

Since heavy rain was in our forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday, we decided Monday was our best opportunity to harvest the garlic. My husband set out Monday morning and in less than two hours had all 330 bulbs dug or pulled out.

That evening I went out and tied them in bundles of 10 and Tuesday morning he hung the 33 bundles upstairs in the barn to dry.

Our lavender is in full bloom.

It is the centerpiece of the prayer garden. It is surrounded by roses, tickseed, and lilies that are blooming as well. It smells heavenly (unless you ask my husband who is not a fan of the fragrance)

and it is being laboriously foraged by countless honeybees and bumble bees.

Thanks for visiting.

  1. I’m so jealous of your lavender! Once again this year, the lavender plants I bought to replace the ones that died last year aren’t doing well. I dream of lavender fields and all I have are tiny, withering plants😞

  2. Glad to hear it is full of bees! We have so few bees this year I’m finding it concerning. I love lavender, one of my favs for sure. I’ve killed at least 5 different varieties. I think it doesn’t like our humidity much. Also love garlic, smell and all, but like Anne said, not together. 😁

    1. We have three hives of honey bees so I was not surprised to see them but was happy to see the bumbles as well. We have observed fewer types of bees and pollinators the last couple of years . Lavender likes heat and dry. It wasn’t until I planted it on high ground that I was able to get it grow.

      1. Good tip, thanks, will find a high ground spot next time! I have honey bees too, right near the garden even, and this is the first year they aren’t all over the cucumbers and flowering herbs. It’s sad not to work beside them in the garden!

  3. I enjoy the smell of both but definitely in moderation. Each one of them has the ability to be overpowering. Congratulations on the garlic harvest. I was just thinking about how good some scape pesto would be with my crackers . So delicious 😋

    1. I’ve definitely experienced the overpowering smell of garlic when dehydrating it. 🙂 I have some scapes in the fridge. Planning on cooking some up with dinner tonight.

  4. My grandmother loved lavender – she lived in Canada where the English brand Yardley, was popular. She had soap, dusting powder, sachets and a toilet water. So, when I think of lavender, I think of my grandmother. I even wrote a post about lavender for Grandparents Day. So, my grandmother bought me lavender toiletries to get me started, which was kind of her, but I really didn’t care for wearing the smell, although I like the smell of the flowers lavender (if that makes sense). It looks pretty in your prayer garden. I am up this late due to this tornado watch. Even though I have a weather radio, I decided to stay up even though the watch is up until 3:00 a.m. I hope it fizzles out, though the projected 66 straight-line winds are worrisome.

    1. It makes perfect sense because their products are probably a blend of various fragrances -not pure lavender.
I hope you got some sleep last night. I don’t think the tornado warning was for our area but we did get heavy rains and are under a flood warning. I slept through it all.

      1. Yes, it was quite strong – when I think of my grandmother I think of lavender from when I was young and she still worked. In later years, it was liniment – she fell on the ice and had a bad knee where she put liniment on it for years. I finally went to bed at 2:15 – I was worried about it going to “warning” and it was pouring, a torrential downpour and high winds when I shut off the light. No worries with drought-like conditions now. My grass is bright green.

    1. I love lavender too. I often use I often use lavender oil when to help relax my muscles when they cramp up at night.
The smell of garlic is best in the kitchen. Added to the right recipes just the smell can make me hungry. 🙂
