It Looks Like Spring is Springing – Finally – I Think

After a brutally cold winter and a March that has seemed to be one step forward two steps back it looks like spring is springing. Monday and Tuesday were both t-shirt days (only the second and third ones we’ve had this year) so my husband and I got a few little outside jobs done at the farm.

Join me for some of our sights of spring.

The crocuses, our first spring flowers are blooming. 🙂

Our mini daffodils began blossoming on Tuesday.

The rest of the daffodils are up but no flowers yet.

The garlic is up but seems slow. We had rain in the forecast for Tuesday, so I gave the garlic a dose of fertilizer on Monday. We did get some rain/storms Tuesday, but at least it wasn’t an all-day rain.

The chickens were out enjoying the weather. This hen actually stopped and posed for me. They have been laying good since the middle of February and some of them are starting to act broody. We will likely let a couple of them brood some chicks later this year.

The bees were out in full force. My husband mentioned seeing that they were carrying pollen back to the hive.

My best guess is that they are gathering pollen from the poplar trees

or the maple trees. Perhaps both.

Believe it or not we spotted our beagle fish on Monday. LOL. I thought it might be a bit early in the season for that.

Ruby didn’t do the full body plunge that Ranger did, but she was in far enough to get her belly wet. I’m looking forward to spending time in the pond too but not until it warms up A LOT!

  6. Ruth, I’m amazed you have so many Spring flowers up already … I can maybe understand the Crocuses, but am amazed by the growth of the Daffodils. There is nothing up around here, just the Snowdrops and they’re looking bedraggled by now. Marge planted Crocuses years ago and I keep peeking over the fence, to see them, but there are just some green shoots and that is it. I am glad it rained once today and not because I fertilized my garlic, but because they are saying that rain and thunderstorm we had around 4:00-ish may affect the chance for severe weather in round #2 going through from 8-10 and lessen it. My fingers are crossed for that.

    1. That first round missed us but then we had a storm come through a while ago that started out with strong winds. My husband spotted some damage it did to one of our neighbors’ homes and it blew a lot of stuff around the neighborhood. At least it didn’t last long. Looking at the radar I think the rest of the storms will go south of us. I guess March is going out like a lion. I wonder if the 38 degrees forecast for tomorrow is an April Fool’s joke. LOL.

      1. That’s good you didn’t have any damage at your place. Hopefully your gardens are not too soggy since we’re having rainy weather all week. I am happy the weather alarm has not gone off yet. I’ve been watching three weather sources and they all say it should be done by 10:00 p.m. Thank goodness we got the rain which diminished the severity. I’ve been on pins and needles worrying about it. Then we can concentrate on Thursday’s bad weather since it’s going to be so warm. I think it came in like a lion too! A cruel April Fool’s joke for Michigan! 🙂

      2. I hope the storms weren’t too bad in your area. At this point I think I would rather have the warm stormy weather than this cold weather nonsense. I see rain in Thursday forecast but nothing severe (at this point).

      3. Thankfully they fizzled out thanks to the earlier storm we had … I was happy for that. Yes, a round #1 and a round #2 for Thursday, not severe is what I heard too. Fingers crossed. This morning Accuweather on WWJ said we are having a rainy April.
