Monthly Inspiration

Hello and welcome to August.

I have something a bit different for our monthly inspiration and I hope it at least makes you smile.

A while back, my husband and I were talking about tv commercials that we remembered from when we were young. When I mentioned one of my favorites was the Faygo pop commercial I was surprised that he didn’t remember it. Then it occurred to me that Faygo(soda) pop is a Michigan product. My husband grew up in Ohio and while Faygo is sold in Ohio today perhaps it was not when he was growing up.

Ironically, this song/commercial that is all about fond memories from childhood has become one of my fond memories from childhood.

Turn up the volume and enjoy! If you remember it, you’ll probably even sing along. I know I do. πŸ™‚

Doesn’t that make you want a cold bottle of red pop?

What is your favorite (soda) pop?

Thanks for visiting.

  1. I remember drinking red pop. My Mom would put ice cream in it for a Pop float. We only hit pop/soda on Friday nights.
Sorry my friend, I don’t remember the commercial though. Happy August!

  2. I did sing along to the Red Pop song Ruth and I remember this commercial too. When I was in college, almost every Friday night my friends on the newspaper staff and I would go to Bimbo’s in Dearborn. I know they had a Bimbo’s in Ann Arbor too. We would go because Friday (and Saturday) nights they had the Red Garter Band and they used to play all the sing-a-long songs from decades back. They all played banjos and wore straw hats and red vests like this guy in the commercial. They had one wall with a huge white screen and the words to the songs appeared on the wall with a bouncing red ball – you also got sing-a-long sheets at the table. We always had pizza. I had an advantage because a lot of the songs were by Mitch Miller and my parents had records of all his hits, so I pretty much knew the songs by heart, having heard them so much over the years. They played a lot of Ragtime hits too.

I also liked the Detroit Zoo commercials, the old one from the 80s with the animals talking. I will put the YouTube video in a separate comment in case it would make this comment go to your SPAM filter.

I don’t drink pop to be honest – I wasn’t allowed to drink it as a kid and never drank it much as an adult, however, a fellow blogger just wrote about Black Cows and root beer floats and I did like a nice root beer float, but haven’t had one in a while.

      1. The zoo commercial was the cutest commercial and it won a lot of awards and the Detroit Zoo allowed other zoos to use it as an incentive for people to visit the zoo. I wonder if they used it for Ontario zoos too?

      2. No, but when I was younger we only ever watched American TV and shows, including for the news, out of Detroit, as there was only one Canadian TV channel the CBC.

      3. I see – I wondered how you saw that zoo commercial. I have a former coworker who lives in Kingsville and she commuted to downtown Detroit every day for decades. I keep in touch with her and she told me she never watched the Canadian news just Channel 7 (WXYZ) in Detroit (for everything). She says she still thinks in terms of the Fahrenheit temp scale, never adapting to the Celsius temp scale.

      4. I watch Canadian news now….never US….never even CNN unless some world catastrophe is happening. I don’t watch US TV period, mostly because I hate the shows, esp. all those reality tv shows.

      5. I don’t have TV, so I watch any news stories online, as I follow a lot of news sites on social media. Plus, I have my trusty radio tuned to WWJ 950 AM. It is an all-news station, except they stopped being “live” from midnight to 5:00 a.m. as to news/weather/traffic. I don’t agree with that schedule because what if there was an emergency? I follow a few news people on Twitter (Anderson Cooper, Sanjay Gupta and Brian Entin) … Brian Entin reports live on many newsworthy events. He was present for all the court hearings relative to the Bryan Kohlberger case and has done follow-up on him re: the witness impact statements, prison, released documents. I learned about him during the Gabby Petito saga.

      6. James Paterson has a new non-fiction book out called The Idaho Four about the murders. I have it on order at the library, but may cancel, as I think it will be too gruesome for me. I don’t watch/read true crime stuff, still I was curious about the guy. I’m not on Twitter at all.

      7. I didn’t know he wrote about the Kohlberger murders. Was he waiting until the sentencing for the release of the book? There are some gory details coming out now that the case is over and the documents are being publicized. I’ve listened or read some of the news articles and yes, they are pretty gruesome. The young lady who survived, peeked in the bedrooms while on the phone with 911, but did not realize the other students were dead at the time. I’m sure had she seen what happened to them, she likely would have more psychological problems and survivor guilt than she already has. I joined Twitter a long time ago for news information from some of the beat reporters on my all-news radio station, plus my favorite meteorologist, now retired, was on Twitter and then, as well as now, he has always given ongoing reports during severe weather, even when on vacation or out of the country. He is very interested in climate change and is on a panel with others around the world and each year they meet and he does a follow-up summary about the meeting. I think it was in Belgium this year. I like the news interviews on trending topics.

      8. I think the Patterson book just came out. I checked on Goodreads this morning for reviews and most people found it captivating but some thought he had extrapolated a lot, considering the FBI never released a lot of data, as the guy pled guilty so there was no court case. I did read a bit about the surviving room-mates and why they hadn’t reported it until the next day and that seemed weird to me but I guess they were scared to leave their rooms, still they all had cell phones? Don’t think I will read the Patterson book, once those images are in your mind you can’t get them out. It’s like looking at those Gaza strip photos on the news every night – heartbreaking to see all those starving people scrambling for food dropped from the sky.

      9. See, I wondered how Patterson could have written about it when the documents were only released after the sentencing (maybe two weeks ago). I wondered about a lot of things in that timeline too Joni. Last week I listened to the 911 call from a roommate and a neighbor helped her place the call as she was so shaken. Amazing to think that Kohlberger was working on a Ph.D. in criminal justice … he was supposedly brilliant, so was he so enamored with his studies that he decided to be a copycat? It makes you wonder. And why did they never find the knife, but he left the knife sheath behind? I heard speculation that he wanted to be caught so he left it purposely. It might be a wee bit too gory, especially for you as you like to read at night just before bed. The images of those Gaza strip photos are haunting – skin and bones and yes, trying to reach the dropped food or several starving adults in front of one low bowl of gruel.

      10. No problem. I’m enjoying reading your comments but haven’t really followed the case. I do agree with Joni that the book would probably be too disturbing for me to read.

      11. That’s good Ruth as I suddenly realized we were on your blog. I follow an investigative reporter from News Nation on social media. I don’t have TV so I follow a lot of news sites. He gave a lot of insight into the case and attended every hearing so I learned a lot and I would not be interested in the book either. I’m sure this will not be the first book about Kohlberger, nor the last one.

    1. That sound like a lot of fun, Linda. The Detroit zoo commercial was fun too. “My l lines, my lines” Lol! I don’t drink much pop anymore. The last I had was at my grandson’s birthday party – they had root beer from their local A&W. That is the best root beer.

      1. Yes, it was a fun time Ruth – all good, clean fun and we loved the singalongs they had. The Red Garter band used to play at different gigs, often outdoor events in the Summer. A root beer float is a special memory of Summertime.
