Happy Thanksgiving

As far as weather goes, Monday was our best day of the week leading up to our Thanksgiving holiday. I took this opportunity to get out to the farm and work with my husband.

The sky was gray and the wind was brisk. I appreciated my winter coat.

Most of the trees are bare now and the pond level is still very low indicating that we are still in a drought. According to the US Drought Monitor we have moderate drought conditions.

The sun unsuccessfully tried to break through the clouds.

The chickens spent the day out and about. They don’t mind the wind and cold so much but when the snow comes they will spend most of their time in the coop.

They have been going through their molt and most have stopped laying eggs. I always feel sorry for them when I see them molting. They look so disheveled.

Many of them have gotten their new feathers in but won’t start laying again until the days become longer. For now we are still getting one or two eggs every other day. I’m thankful that my daughter and son-in-law have a new flock this year who won’t molt and should continue to lay through the winter. Hopefully I can get my eggs from them.

There isn’t a lot of work to be done at the farm this time of year but my husband has been working on cutting and splitting firewood. The large maple logs have been seasoning for two years so are ready to be split and burned. He had a stack cut and ready to be split.

We worked together – he placing the log on the splitter, me operating the lever, both of us removing the split logs and tossing them on the pile.

We also worked together to stack the wood once we had it split. We are so thankful for the gas-powered log splitter we purchased two years ago. It makes short and easy work of the task of splitting firewood.

Now as my husband and I prepare to watch the Detroit Lions Thanksgiving Day Game, I wish you all many blessings and a Happy Thanksgiving for those of you who are celebrating today.

GO LIONS!

  2. Those poor chickens molting – it is such a stressful time for all birds and makes them listless. I know from over the years with pet parakeets and canaries. I didn’t know about the egg laying during the molt. The weather outside is frightful before it is supposed to be with the winds and sudden cold. I hope you had a blessed Thanksgiving, even though the Lions lost today. They’re back at it next Thursday though.

    1. Oh tat wind was something else. I’m just glad that there wasn’t a lot of snow with it. We had a quiet day – just watched the game. Very disappointed but still rooting for the Lions and looking forward to next Thursday’s game. We will have the kids over for dinner on Saturday, so I’ll be making pies today.

      1. Finally those winds died down today. I went outside this morning and saw my neighbor’s huge thermometer was in the garden, ripped off the deck. Then I went into my front yard and saw the address sign on the horizontal bar of the pole lamp fell down into the bushes. This happened about a year ago and I used black pipe cleaners to hook it back on as I don’t have the street address on the house, just the light. In September, I finally found a handyman for other projects and asked him if he could permanently attach the sign to the horizontal bar of the pole light. He put in huge bolts as the holes were worn. So this morning, I hooked it up “the old way” until he returns. He missed a big spot when tuckpointing and is supposed to come back (a month ago).

I hope your pies turn out – you did well in your pumpkin patch and apples too, so I’ll bet your house smells delicious.

      2. I didn’t notice any wind damage but the shepherd’s hook that holds the bird feeder blew over. My husband stood it back up and it did stay in place. The house did smell wonderful, and it will today as I roast the turkey. 🙂

      3. I can imagine how nice that smells. 🙂 I hope you don’t get a lot of snow. My little MSN icon has said “snow” for hours and reports a little over an inch, but it looks pretty white outside right now.

      4. Same here Ruth, but early this morning the rain washed some of it away … now we’ll have ice tomorrow morning. The weather is crazy and the 40 mph winds ripped my sign off the bar at the pole light, so I had to put two extra pieces of pipe cleaner, one for each bolt that came out. It’s going to stay like that now ’til Spring as the handyman is likely not going to return for the tuckpointing this late in the year (he missed a big spot). I hope this is not the end of normal Fall.
